Some of you may have seen the teaser a few days ago through Rolex’s social networking service (SNS) channel, but today (September 1), Rolex unexpectedly unveiled a large number of new 2020 products. Since Baselworld was canceled earlier this year in the aftermath of COVID-19, Rolex has been thoroughly silent about whether to launch a new product in 2020. It was only in early September, when autumn entered the threshold of autumn, that major new products were released online all at once, giving a surprise. Among the many new products in the Oyster Perpetual collection, let’s take a look at the Submariner, which will definitely draw your attention.

It is no exaggeration to say that the history of the Submariner, founded in 1953, is the history of a diver’s watch. The replica Rolex Submariner, along with Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms, played a decisive role in establishing the classic look of a diver’s watch as the first modern diver’s watch chariot with a rotating bezel. Of course, I do not intend to revisit the epic history of the Submariner in this post. Because you are already familiar with the content. As the archetype of the modern diver’s watch and the most loved sports watch in the history of wristwatches, the Submariner has continued to be updated in the 21st century by combining with cutting-edge materials while maintaining its iconic features. And this year, finally, we are introducing the latest version of two next-generation work hoses.
Submariner, which was newly released in 2020, is divided into two main categories: a time-only version, which is often abbreviated as Nonde, and a date version. The biggest change in the new model is the size. The case diameter has been slightly increased from the previous 40mm to 41mm, and the case design and finish have also been changed subtly. The shape of the rug has become a little sharper, and the side of the case is polished to add a little more bling-bling. Considering the recent trend toward smaller fake watches, Rolex, which has maintained the size of the professional line conservatively for many years, is curious about the reason why it suddenly slightly increased the size.
It is presented in cases and bracelets such as 904L series Oystersteel, Oystersteel and yellow gold, yellow Rolesor, white gold, etc. Combination is also different. And I fastened the Oyster bracelet, which was subtly re-designed from the same material as the case. Would you say that the width of the upper lug of the bracelet is slightly wider? The side of the bracelet is also polished like the case profile. And the buckle part is always equipped with the Rolex Glidelock extension system. Serrated sliding links and 10 grooves make it easy to extend and adjust the length of the bracelet from approx. 2mm up to 20mm without the use of tools.
Another big change of the new Submariner is hidden in the movement. It is a complete replacement of the existing 3130 (non-date) and 3135 (date) with the next-generation in-house automatic calibers 3230 (non-date) and 3235 (date). This change was actually foreseen a few years ago with other collections such as the Datejust, GMT-Master II, Yacht-Master 42 and Sea-Dweller. However, the 3230, a time-only version, is the first to appear in this year’s collection. In general, it guarantees an increased power reserve of up to 70 hours, and it uses a paramagnetic alloy material to resist magnetic and shock blue Parachrom hairspring, a high-performance Paraflex shock absorber, and a non-magnetic nickel-phosphorus alloy material. It boasts powerful performance by constantly applying its own cutting-edge components, such as the Chronergy escapement. Certified by the Swiss Official Chronometer Institute (COSC), the movement is assembled into the case and again added its own Rolex certification to ensure high precision with a work tolerance of −2/+2 seconds, which is almost twice the COSC standard.
With the exception of case and movement changes, the indexes (and dials) are filled with Chromalight, a long-lasting luminous paint, Cyclops convex lenses with magnifying date on sapphire crystal, unidirectional rotating bezel with Cerachrom inserts. There is no significant change in the existing characteristic details such as Of course, the 300m water resistance specification remains the same. Although there are no dramatic changes, the new green Cerachrom bezel that reinterprets the Gugu version in its own way, as the Gugu Green Sub, which was released on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Submariner in the past, has enjoyed tremendous popularity beyond expectations, even with a premium. The version (Ref. 126610 LV) is also expected to be very popular.
